Pufferfish Commando is a mobile 3D runner style game where the player controls a stationary pufferfish rotating in all directions. Your goal as the Pufferfish Commando is to survive for as long as possible before the deep-sea enemies reach you. The 2D designs in the game are hand-drawn to give the interface a rough, retro arcade feel. The 3D characters, including the pufferfish and its enemies, were designed with a low-poly, non-threatening style to soften the game's combat theme. All 2D assets were created or edited in Adobe Illustrator, and the 3D assets were made using Blender or directly within Unity.
Pictured above are snapshots of the main menu and inventory sequence, as well as in-game action. The inventory scene is were the player can equip different items to defend themselves against enemies. These items feature wacky and creative defence systems that feature bold colours and shapes to catch the attention of the user. The UI elements in the game scene are also mean to reflect the playful, low-poly, arcade style of the game. The flow and elements of the game are further explained in the video walkthrough below.
The above images are the background images used in Pufferfish Commando. These images were hand drawn and were the original inspiration for many of the characters and the game itself. The images were edited and colourized in Adobe Illustrator.
The three videos above showcase some of the enemy characters that are encountered in the game, as their original 3D models in blender. The videos display the detailed but cartoony style of the characters, as well as their movement and attack animations.
